Musical Keys, Part Two

by Jay Ford, Director on July 27, 2021

Last month I wrote about Major Keys. Today we look at minor keys.

Every Major key has a relative minor key.

To create the notes of minor key start on the 6th note of a Major key and create a new scale.

EX. C D E F G A B C = THE C MAJOR SCALE
EX. A B C D E F G A = THE A NATURAL MINOR SCALE

The Natural Minor scale has a new intervallic formula between each note: whole step, half step, whole step, whole step, half step, whole step and whole step. (Whenever you have an intervallic distance of one and a half steps between the first and third note you create minor tonality).

The following Natural Minor Scales are:

A B C D E F G A
E F# G A B C D E
B C# D E F# G A B
F# G# A B C# D E F#
C# D# E F# G# A B C#
G# A# B C# D# E F# G#
D E F G A Bb C D
G A Bb C D Eb F G
C D Eb F G Ab Bb C
F G Ab Bb C Db Eb F
Bb C Db Eb F Gb Ab Bb
Eb F Gb Ab Bb Cb Db Eb

Why Natural Minor?
